UAV Topographic Survey vs Conventional Surveying: When the Drone Is Faster

A UAV topographic survey is faster than conventional surveying on areas over 20–50 ha when you need continuous coverage and an orthophoto, not millimetre installation control. Below that threshold the drone does not win: laying GCPs, flight approval and photo processing take longer than a day with a total station. In Aktau and Mangystau Region wind, heat and restricted sites sit on top of area — without them the line “the drone is always faster” does not hold.

This piece is for anyone writing a topographic-survey brief: when to order aerial photography, when to keep a ground crew, and when to combine both.

Two Different Products

Ground survey with a Leica TS06 Plus total station and GNSS (South G4, Leica GS-08 Plus) records chosen stations: relief, detail and utilities the surveyor deliberately measured. Point accuracy is centimetre-level; on installation it is millimetre-level.

UAV aerial photography gives a continuous model: an orthophoto and a DTM with millions of points. With a DJI Matrice 4E at 80–120 m and ground GCPs we obtain 3–5 cm/pixel, a 5–10 cm plan tie and 8–15 cm in height. That is enough for 1:500–1:2000 topo plans and not enough to check tank anchor bolts.

Aircraft specs and the field cycle are in the article on the DJI Matrice 4E in industrial surveying.

Productivity figures are working estimates from industrial pads in Mangystau, not a laboratory bench. On dense port fabric in Aktau, ground survey can be faster than a drone: many screens, little open sky, many nodes that a total station will survey anyway.

When the Drone Is Actually Faster

  • A 5–50 km pipeline corridor. A strip hundreds of metres wide closes in one or two flights instead of weeks of chainage. The designer gets a DTM of the whole corridor.
  • A field pad from ~50 ha. Inventory of wells, pits and roads — one orthophoto instead of a crew walkover.
  • Reclamation. A “before / after” DTM comparison computes volumes without a cubic-metre dispute.
  • Hard-to-reach scarp terrain. The operator does not lower a total station onto every brink.

When the drone is not faster and not more accurate:

  • setting-out and as-built of structures;
  • deformation monitoring of buildings and tanks (needs levelling / GNSS cycles);
  • plots under 20 ha with no orthophoto requirement;
  • days with wind above the aircraft’s working limit — typical for Mangystau.

Choice of topo-plan scale is a separate question: see 1:500 vs 1:10,000 topographic survey.

What Cannot Be Cut from the UAV Cycle

Flight speed is not the speed of a finished plan. Mandatory steps:

  1. GCPs. Control points are coordinated with GNSS tied to the state network. Without them the orthophoto is a picture, not a survey document.
  2. Flight approval. Commercial aerial survey in Kazakhstan falls in the specific UAS category: aircraft registration, a flight plan, limits near aerodromes and restricted sites. Aerial-survey work also follows the permit procedure through the competent authority, with coordination by the Ministry of Defence, the NSC and the State Security Service. That goes into the schedule, not “we took off from the bonnet”.
  3. Weather. Matrice 4E operating range is −10…+40 °C. Summer survey in Aktau often moves to the morning.
  4. Office processing. Photogrammetry, GCP check, delivery in GeoTIFF / LAS / DWG.

The service sits inside engineering geodetic surveys.

FAQ

Does the drone fully replace a total station? No. They are different products: continuous coverage versus high point accuracy.

Are GCPs still needed if the drone has RTK? Yes, for a deliverable topo plan. RTK speeds image georeferencing; ground control confirms accuracy.

How long does flight approval take? It depends on the zone and work category. On industrial pads in Mangystau it is a schedule step, not “the same day”.

Conclusion

A drone is faster than conventional surveying where area and continuous coverage matter more than millimetres: corridors, fields, reclamation from 20–50 ha. On installation, monitoring and small plots a ground crew is faster and more accurate. The right contractor chooses the tool rather than selling a UAV for every task.
